Trandolapril inhibits atherosclerosis in the Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic rabbit.

The effects of trandolapril (0.25 mg/kg body wt per 48 hours) on aortic atherosclerosis were examined in the Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic rabbit treated from 3 to 12 months of age. Trandolapril caused a significant decrease in atherosclerotic involvement of the intimal surface of total aorta from 56.3 +/- 5.0% in control Watanabe rabbits to 35.0 +/- 4.1% with treatment (p less than 0.01). ...

ApoVLDL of the Watanabe Heritable Hyperlipidemic rabbit and the cholesterol-fed rabbit.

The Watanabe Heritable Hyperlipidemic rabbit (WHHL rabbit) and the cholesterol-fed rabbit have been reported to show elevations of very low density (VLDL), intermediate density (IDL), and low density lipoproteins (LDL), and a broad-beta band on agarose-gel electrophoresis. We have studied the lipid and lipoprotein composition of WHHL rabbits and cholesterol-fed rabbits using ultracentrifugal an...

The Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbit, its characteristics and history of development: a tribute to the late Dr. Yoshio Watanabe.

Professor Yoshio Watanabe, who developed the WHHL rabbit, died on December 13, 2008. He had contributed to studies of lipoprotein metabolism and atherosclerosis, and to the development of hypolipidemic and/or anti-atherosclerotic compounds. WHHL rabbits show hypercholesterolemia due to deficiency of LDL receptors, and very similar lipoprotein metabolism to humans. The incidences of coronary ath...

Correction of the genetic defect in hepatocytes from the Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic rabbit.

Familial hypercholesterolemia is an inherited disease in humans that is caused by a defect in the receptor for low density lipoproteins (LDLR). The existence of an animal model for this disease, the Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbit, makes it an attractive candidate for developing new therapies that involve gene transfer into liver. As a first step toward the development of these ...

Social environment influences the progression of atherosclerosis in the watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic rabbit.

BACKGROUND Although there is evidence that emotionally stressful behavior can accelerate the progression of atherosclerosis, there is less data to support the notion that affiliative social behavior can slow disease progression. The present study examines the influence of social environment on the progression of atherosclerosis in the Watanabe Heritable Hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbit, a model tha...
